I was reading a comment on a blog that I follow where the person stated, “I haven’t found a diet that works for me.” And I realized that many people feel the same. People are looking for the best diets that work. Guest what? Even though there are many diets out there, you will not find one that works in the long term.

Let’s face it. As a nation, we are obese! And we are all looking for that easy way out. We are looking for a diet pill or shake. Really we are looking for a magic potion to make us thin again.

In the article below I will explain to you why you have been struggling to lose weight and why being healthy goes hand in hand with weight loss.

It is more of a mindset than anything else. If you can fix your relationship with food, you can lose the weight.

Changing your relationship with food is simply when we eat food to nourish our body, rather than making us feel better. Often without even realizing it, we eat simply because we can.

For example, one day when I was first trying to lose weight, I noticed that I was eating some potato chips. I wasn’t even aware what I was doing. I had just about eaten half a bag. But the scary part was that I wasn’t even hungry. I was eating these chips simply because they were there.

This mindless eating is what got me fat. It made me realize that I was out of control and needed to make a change. But change didn’t come easily because I couldn’t simply quit. And this lack of control with food made feel feel like a total loser.

You see certain foods like highly processed foods and carbs are extremely addictive. It is difficult to simply quit eating them.

When many people feel out of control with their weight and diet, they want to do a “diet” and diets are restrictive. They make you feel like you have to be perfect. And the truth is that no one is perfect. Yet, when we do diets and they don’t work, we feel like big fat failures.

This is why diets don’t work.

But the good news is you can get healthy and feel in control as you lose weight by changing your relationship with food.

How do I change my relationship with food?

Educate yourself by learning the science of how your body uses nutrition to thrive. When you do this, you will quickly realize that most of the foods in stores are not even “real food”. And this crap that we eat is what is making us fat.

It is important to realize that carbs and sugar which comes from processed foods are what is making us fat and not well.

Once you realize that the food you eat is making you sick, you can start to eat healthier foods.

Why Is Bread So addictive?

This post talks about the addiction to bread and how to overcome it.

When I’m working with my clients, I often need to have one of two conversations with them. One is alcohol and the other is bread. These two things are triggers for many people and they never want to give them up. I hear things like, “Can’t I just have a little piece of bread with my eggs?” or “I can eat healthy, except I don’t think I can give up bread.”

I felt the same way when I was eating the SAD (standard American) diet. Every year, I looked forward to St. Patrick s Day because I could buy a loaf of Irish soda bread and eat it up with some soft butter. It felt comforting to me.

Bread is one of the hardest things for people to eliminate from their diet because they don’t want to give it up. It’s like an addiction.

Why is Bread So Addictive?

Bread is addictive because of the high starch content that makes it almost impossible to stop eating once you’ve started. You see many people go through a sort of chemical process that makes them want to eat more. The more you eat it, the more you want it.

The thing is most bread is made from “reminded white flour” which is highly processed. White bread is high in sugar so it can be very addictive. This is why most diet programs frown about eating bread. It raises insulin and makes it difficult to lose weight and get healthy.

Some signs of Bread Addiction is:

  • Cravings for bread or crackers. Also, cravings so cookies and cakes.
  • You would rather have these bread products than any other kind of food.
  • You can not stop eating even when you are full. Perhaps you keep going back for more.
  • Later on you feel guilty and frustrated. “Why can’t I stop eating bread?”
  • You must have bread products with every meal. No way will you have cheese without crackers or eggs without toast.

Does this sound familiar? If so, you may be addicted to bread. It did to me because I was addicted not only to bread, but any starch that was high in sugar. I also had terrible side effects… It made me fat. In fact, it was probably one of the main reasons I was so unhealthy.

The bottom line is, you are not alone with your struggles to give up bread. In fact 75% of obese people are addicted to carbs.

Bread Gives a Sugar High

Although bread isn’t sugar, it raises insulin which stimulates appetite which makes it really easy to over-eat and makes it difficult to stop eating. Bread sort of gives you a sugar high. It feels good emotionally to eat bread. And when you do stop, later on, you feel sluggish. Some people even refer to the need for a nap as a crash.

Over time, the more you eat bread products, your body can develop insulin resistance which is not good. This means your body isn’t using insulin correctly and it causes too much in your blood. This is when doctors often warn people that they are “borderline” diabetes. Or pre-diabetic. Down the road this way of eating can cause Type 2 diabetes.

Bread is comfort food?

The other issue is the emotional side of eating bread. Many of us look at bread or cookies as comfort food. It is what many people reach for when they are feeling sad, stressed, bored etc. But of course even though at the time, it is enjoyable to eat. Emotional eating is often followed by regret.

I remember the frustration of feeling out of control.

Best Sugar Free Hard Candy For Diabetics

One of the nice side effects of following a low carb diet is that your cravings for sweets go away. And this is really a good thing if you need to avoid sugar for health reasons.

I made a decision to give up sugar for my health and overall happiness. Once I gave up sugar, I lost weight and I feel like I have gotten my life back.

I love this keto lifestyle, but with it being a lifestyle, the thought of never having candy or sweets sounds awfully restrictive. I mean would you want to go through the rest of your life and never have something sweet? I certainly wouldn’t. So I think having a treat once in a while is perfectly okay.

But if you are a diabetic or are severely overweight, you may want to totally eliminate sweets until you are off of your medications and healthier.

Safe for Diabetics

The good thing is there are some sugar-free hard candies out there that don’t include sugar in its ingredients and therefore it shouldn’t raise your blood sugar. But actually, you have to be careful about what you are eating because most artificial sugars are full of fake food and even chemicals. And they can do more harm than good. Personally, I stay far away from candies that use, Aspartame, Saccharin, and Sucralose.

Instead, I suggest candy that only uses natural sweeteners like monk fruit, stevia, erythritol as they don’t raise blood sugar at all. And xylitol hard candy is a good option as well because the blood sugar effects are minimal. Actually, when it comes to candy, I would go for hard candy with xylitol as you wouldn’t have the same aftertaste you get with the others.

Xylitol is a natural sugar alcohol which comes from birch bark or corn. It tastes sweet and is actually good for you.

Ice Chips Candy

I love Ice Chips Candy because they only use Xylitol that comes from birch bark. So I don’t have to worry about Xylitol that has come from genetically modified corn. This is important to me as part of my healthy lifestyle is to avoid GMO whenever possible.

I first heard about Ice Chips on Shark Tank. And I’m so glad I did. Ice Chips were actually created by two grand-moms in a garage!

I love living a low carb lifestyle, but sometimes I just have a sweet tooth and want a hard candy to suck on. Most mints have sugar or are made of other artificial sweeteners which are not good at all.

Help for the Stress Eater?

As someone who was overweight for many years, I found my biggest challenge was stress eating. You know what I mean, eating when you are not hungry. Whenever I was stressed to the max, I would literally eat my feelings.

Here is an example of what I’m talking about…

Imagine this….

It is the hectic holiday season and life has been crazy busy. On top of the financial stress and holiday shopping, you are working long days at a hectic job. After a very manic day, you decide to stop by the store and pick up something quick for dinner. While out shopping for something to make for dinner you see some cookies or cakes. And without even thinking about it, you buy the cookies. You may even open them up and eat them in the car before you make it all the way home.

This sort of scenario would happen to me all the time. And then once I would get home, I wouldn’t be able to stop myself from eating more of the cookies.

I would have thoughts going through my head like…“I deserve this!”

I would try to limit myself to a little bit. But it would always seem that it would be gone by the end of the night.

The next day I think to myself, “What is wrong with me?” 

I feel disgusted with myself.

Many people who struggle with their weight also struggle with stress eating. And often people eat just to eat. Have you ever wondered why this happens?

I think the reason why it happens to most of us is that we are looking to feel better. We are looking for a way to calm ourselves down. For some reason, eating is soothing and tends to make us feel better, until the next day when we feel like crap. I remember waking in the morning after a binge feeling awful. I would be all gassy and even have a headache. I would be full of lots of regret for what I ate the night before.

My weight and food obsession was a real problem for many years. When I turned 50 I was just under 200 pounds. I knew I needed to make a change.

And I did. But it took a lot of hard work. I had to totally change my relationship with food. And I had to admit to myself that I was a sugar addict.

Now I eat to nourish my body. And I feel so much better. I am no longer addicted to sugar and carbs like I was.  I don’t feel the need to pig out when I’ve had a bad day. I find other ways to feel good.

But getting to this point wasn’t easy. It was really difficult. I had to eliminate all of the processed foods that I was obsessed with.

By eliminating the sugar and carbs I also ended up losing over 60 pounds. But more importantly, I am healthy and probably added years to my life.

I also read lots of books that dealt with the issue of stress eating. I wanted to figure out what was going on in my head. I felt so out of control around food which stressed me out because I was so in control of every other aspect of my life.

This book helped me to realize that I wasn’t crazy at all. I learned that food isn’t meant to make me feel calm or happy. It isn’t meant to help me emotionally. Food is simply to feed my body. I learned other ways of dealing with many of the negative emotions that I felt in my life.

I also learned that when I give my body really nutritious food I feel amazing. I have energy and for some reason, I feel happy and healthy. On the other hand, when I eat food that raises my glucose I feel depressed and even sad.

So I will never go back to eating sugar again. Sugar is an addictive drug to me that I don’t want a part of.

Should I Stop Eating Sugar?

This is a question that most everyone has struggled with if they want to lose weight. The question itself is very simple. It’s just a simple question. And it really only requires a yes or no answer. But behind the sentence, there are so many emotions. The person asking the question of themselves will respond in many different ways. And if they are like me, they will come up with many reasons as to why not to give up sugar.

You see, quitting sugar isn’t so simple. Sugar is not just something that adds sweetness to foods that we eat. It is an entire addiction that has affected many people for years.

My personal experience as a sugar addict is that it is nearly impossible to stop eating it unless you are emotionally ready to make the changes needed to stop. Sugar addiction doesn’t always affect our body (at least not right away) but it also affects our mind. We have to make the physical switch (stop eating sugar) and mentally switch to changing our mindset. Changing the mindset takes work, time and effort. But the first step is really in accepting that you are addicted.

I Am Addicted To Sugar

How do you know if you might have a problem with sugar? It is pretty simple really. If you think it would be difficult to give up sugar for any reason, then you probably have a problem with sugar. And by sugar, I mean carbs and foods that have sugar as the first ingredient.

For example pasta, bread, and fruit. Could you give those up? Many people can’t. But they are all very addictive.

And by the way, if you are overweight, you probably have a problem with sugar.

The answer to “Should I Stop Eating Sugar?” is extremely personal. But to help you decide if you are ready, let’s talk about some of the benefits of kissing sugar goodbye…

  • You will begin feeling better. You will have more energy and will no longer have afternoon crashes.
  • You will lose weight. It is a no-brainer that sugar makes you fat. Eliminate it from the diet and you will get thin.
  • Once cravings diminish, you will have control over what you eat. You will be able to stop binge eating.
  • You will be more satisfied and less hungry. (Sugar is empty calories)
  • You will have better dental checkups and fewer cavities.
  • You will be healthier.
  • You will have better skin.
  • You may be adding years to your life.
  • You could prevent diabetes down the road. Or possibly reverse it as in the case of my boyfriend Brian and our friend Steve. Yes! It can be done!

On the other hand, let’s talk about why you may not be ready to quit sugar.

  • It is too hard. This is the number one reason people don’t quit. Because sugar is addictive, it can make you feel crappy when you eliminate it from your diet. You may have a sugar crash where cravings are out of control. It is hard to work through the feeling of sickness often referred to as keto flu.
  • Some people feel like they will be depriving themselves of the taste of sweetness and they may miss out on some of the social things.
  • It will be challenging when your spouse or family still eat carbs and you don’t.
  • Some people think that it is more expensive and more difficult to shop and prepare healthier foods.
  • It takes too much time to get healthy, or learn how to get healthy.
  • “My family won’t eat this way.”
  • I eat out too much to do low carb.

There are many more….but really all of them are excuses, not real reasons. See what I mean. Quitting sugar isn’t about the sugar, it is about the mindset and all the excuses that come with it. If you want to lose weight, I suggest reading everything you can about low carb, high fat. Learn how your body works and why your weight got so physically out of control.

So to answer your question, “Should I give up sugar”?

You are the person who walks around in your body. Either you are ready to get healthy or your not.

What is a Keto Flu and How Long Does It Last?

If you have been researching a Low Carb, High Fat diet also known as a Ketogenic diet, you have probably heard about the Keto Flu. But what is a Keto Flu and how long does it actually last?

The Keto Flu are flu-like symptoms that people often get when they switch over from a highly processed diet to a low carb diet that includes lots of fats. A Keto Flu is the feeling of being sick. Everyone is a bit different. for me, I had a huge headache and I felt weak and irritable. I was very grouchy for several days. My boyfriend, Brian, on the other hand, didn’t have any symptoms at all.

Here are some symptoms of the Keto Flu:

  • feeling tired
  • feeling sick to your stomach
  • feeling dizzy or lightheaded
  • cravings for sweets or carbs
  • leg cramps
  • nausea
  • Nausea
  • irritability

You see, when someone who has been eating a diet full of carbs, sugar, and other processed foods and they suddenly start eating healthy their body doesn’t quite know what to you. It sort of goes into shock. Keep in mind, you are totally changing the way your body processes food. In the past, your body was a glucose burner and used sugar and carbs for fuel. Now your body will become a fat burner and will use ketones for energy. And so your body reacts by going through a sort of withdrawal. It is a normal reaction to the change in the way you are eating.

Sugar is very addictive, just like alcohol or other drugs. So it only makes sense that the withdrawal would be very similar to what alcoholics go through when they quit alcohol. I was a big-time sugar addict and when I went off the carbs, I literally was sick for 2 weeks. I felt awful for about 3 days. The other days I just felt a little off and sluggish. So in short, the keto flu can last anywhere from 4 to 14 days. I think it really depends on how quickly your switch over your diet.

It is very important to make sure you are drinking a lot of water and you are getting enough electrolytes as your body will lose these since your body will be producing less insulin. So it is important to use more salt. You can add it to your food or drinks. Drinking bone broth is another effective way to increase electrolytes.
I also suggest trying some hot lemon water as a way to help you drink more water. Hot fresh lemon water helps to cleans your system and it really good for your skin.

It is also important to make sure you are getting some extra Magnesium, Calcium, and Potassium. You can do this simply by eating plenty of leafy green veggies, nuts, avocado or Salmon. Or you can add a green powder like Keto Perfect Greens.

The good news is once you are in ketosis you will begin to feel amazing.  Most people can tell when they are in ketosis because they feel amazing. Cravings are gone and you have incredible energy. However, if you are not sure, you can always use Keto Test Strips to test your urine and see if you are in ketosis. All you do is pee on the strip and it will let you know if you are in ketosis or not. I used these a lot in the beginning. Now I can pretty much tell by how I feel.

I hope this answers all of the questions out there about the keto flu. The most important thing to know is that the Keto flu doesn’t last very long and it is worth it knowing you are turning your body into a fat burning machine and you are going to be much healthier.

Stevia Water Enhancers

Do you drink enough water? Most of us don’t. I know I never did. I might sound a bit weird, but I genuinely don’t like the taste of water and for that reason, I have a difficult time getting in enough. And water is important for keeping your body healthy and hydrated. Drinking water helps to cleans your system and it helps keep your breath fresh as well.

So recently I have started a few strategies to help me drink more water. For one thing, I drink hot lemon water as a way of cleansing my system.

Drinking water can also help to support your weight loss and dietary efforts.

Recently, I have started adding water enhancers to my water.   All I need to do is add a few squirts and I get a wonderful fruity flavor. Now I drink more water than ever before.

I also would like to mention, if you want the best quality drink it is best to use fresh spring water or filtered water and you will be less likely to be drinking any unwanted chemicals.

When choosing a water enhancer, I choose the ones that don’t contain sugar or artificial sweeteners. I try to be as natural as possible and that is why I endorse products that contain stevia which is a natural product. I like that I get to control the flavor. The more drops I add to water, the more intense the flavor is. Just add so ice and you have the perfect way to hydrate on a hot summer day.

A stevia-based water enhancer, like Sweet Leaf, is also beneficial to a diabetic who is trying to avoid sugar and not raise his or her insulin levels.

It is keto friendly so it helps satisfy a sweet tooth without giving you the added calories and sugar.

When using these drops, a little goes a long way. You will only need a few drops. And if you really want a special treat, try adding a few drops to sparkling water. It almost tastes like sprite except you don’t get all of the chemicals. This is a great option if your kids like sodas. They will be happy and you will appreciate the fact that you are helping them to be healthy.

I also like to add Sweet Drops to my hot beverages as well. The caramels drops taste great in a cup of hot vanilla tea or sometimes I’ll add the coconut or chocolate flavored drops to my morning bulletproof coffee. Sometimes the extra little kick is nice.

Last night my other half, Brian and I took his mother out to Red Lobster for her 80th birthday. And I decided before I went that since I have lost 35 pounds and hit my goal, I would allow myself a Red Lobster biscuit as a treat.

But, when the waiter brought the rolls to the table, I found that I honestly didn’t want one.

I had a wonderful dinner, baked flounder with broccoli and salad. And of course, I smothered the flounder with lots of butter.

But, my point is, I realized that my carb addiction is really under control. 🙂 Eating a low-carb, high-fat diet is the best way to eat if you crave bread.

Many people are addicted to bread. It is really difficult to NOT eat bread products, cakes, and cookies. And worse, once you take a bite it is nearly impossible to stop eating.

And then the cravings are even more difficult to control. And you can’t control them. It really is a vicious cycle.

I know, because for many years I went through this cycle of trying to convince myself that I didn’t need another piece of cake. But The cravings would make me nuts. I felt like I had no control over what I ate.

Are you addicted to Bread? Here are some signs of bread addiction:

  • Cravings for any sort of bread products like cakes, cookies, donuts, and other foods.
  • Inability to stop eating bread products when full.
  • A need to have bread products rather than other sorts of foods.
  • The inability to NOT eat bread or other sweets if it is easily available.

If you can relate to most of the points then you may have an addiction to bread. But you are not alone. Most people have an addiction to bread, Including me.

I used to get frustrated. I would eat wheat bread or grainy bread thinking that I was being healthy.

But here is the thing. Grains are carbs. And even though they appear to be healthy, our bodies treat them as if they are sugar. So when we eat bread our bodies release insulin. This stimulates our appetites which make us want more.

It is an addictive cycle. Many people who are addicted to bread are also addicted to sugar. In reality, they are the same thing.

If you find that you can’t say no to bread, then you are probably a sugar addict.

The good news is you can overcome this addiction to bread by changing how you eat.

The bad news is you will have to give up bread and all the carbs that are high in sugar. And yes you need to give up sugar. The best solution is a high fat, low carb diet.

Not only will you get your cravings under control, but you will lose weight.

When I started my high fat, low carb diet 4 months ago, I weighed 186 pounds. As of today, I am at 152.

Once you have learned how not to eat bread, you will end up feeling wonderful.

And believe it or not, you won’t miss it and those terrible bread cravings will go away. I was really surprised how easily I said no to that Red Lobster biscuit.

Update 2/19/19: Now that I’ve been doing Keto (low carb) for over 4 years and have kept off 60 lbs, I have learned that once in a while I can have some carbs. This is very rare, however.

But when I am in the mood for pizza, I simply make my own using an almond crust. There are lots of recipes online but I simply use Simple Mills Almond Crust. It is super easy to make and it tastes wonderful. Simple Mills also has other low carb snacks.

I really just want you to know that with this lifestyle, you don’t have to feel deprived. And yes, you will need to eliminate a good part of carbs from your diet. But there are healthy substitutions out there.

Why Are So Many People Fat?

I’m a critical thinker. So when something doesn’t feel right, I ask questions and come to my own decisions based on facts.

When it comes to health and diet there is a plethora of information out there. And lots of opposite information. It is very confusing.

I started thinking about the obesity problem that is going on here in the US and in other parts of the world.

Why are so many people fat? Why do we have more type 2 diabetes than ever before?

When I was a kid, my Mom and Dad referred to type 2 diabetes as “sugar diabetes” because it was rare that a child would get it. It was an “older” person disease.

I remember being a young woman in the 1990’s. I learned that fats were bad for you. It seemed during this time that everything became low fat or no fat. I remember eating Snackwells and thinking that I was doing a good thing for my body. I wasn’t.

If you read the label of these Snackwells cookies, you will see that they have no nutritional value. I remember the marketing used to talk about how it didn’t include any fat. Fat makes you fat, eat Snackwells.

If you look back in history since the early 1990’s the obesity rate has gone up dramatically and so has type 2 diabetes.

Guess what!? We had it all wrong.

Sugar is way more addictive than cocaine. So people keep eating more of it. I was one of them.

I didn’t realize how addicted to sugar I was. I thought I was eating a healthy diet by eating low fat and counting calories. I was doing it all wrong and making myself sicker.

Today, I noticed that same Snackwell’s has new packaging. It still says fat-free. But now on the front of the box it says, “without high fructose corn syrup, hydrogenated oil or artificial flavors or preservatives”. So you would think that this would be a healthy snack.

But if you take a close look at the label, there is virtually no nutritional value in the cookies. If you look at the label, it looks like there is 14g of carbs and 9g of sugar. And this is just for 1 cookie.

1985 there was 10% obesity in the United States. Now it is up to 35%! Obesity is very common. And it is getting worse every day.

It makes me really sad every time I see a child who is obese. Or when I hear that someone died from complications of obesity.

But my biggest frustrations come from the fact that many doctors don’t even give their patients the correct information. I’m not sure why. Some say it is because the pharmaceutical companies give them a kick-back. Others say it is because they were taught the wrong information in the first place.

All I know is it is pretty simple. We (folks in the US) started getting fat after we started eating more processed food which was high in sugar.

I Am Addicted To Sugar

The above statement is very scary.

I Am Addicted To SugarI’ve been sugar-free for over 4 months now. It’s funny how when I’m out and about with people, they often offer me sugary drinks or food.

And I joke with them and tell them that

“I get terrible side effects from eating sugar.  It makes me fat”.

And we all laugh.

But it really isn’t a laughing matter. Sugar DID make me fat. It makes you fat and it is making our children fat. And I’m Not talking about the sugar that we add to food. My concern is with all the sugar that is hidden in most foods.

It wasn’t until I started my low carb high fat diet, that I realized how addicted to sugar I was. I knew it by the awful withdrawal my body went through by eliminating sugar from my diet. But it was worth it because I feel amazing!

Sugar Addiction Withdrawal Symptoms

  • Many people experience headaches. (I did)
  • Many people experience body aches similar to the flu.
  • Many people experience intense cravings for more sugar. (I did)
  • Many people experience mood swings or can’t control their emotions. (I did)
  • Many people get the shakes. (I did)

When I was going through my withdrawal symptoms I was really shocked. I wondered, “Could you be a sugar addict”? Many people are. And the sugar addiction could be the root cause of some of the health problems you are having. If you have bipolar, depression, type 2 diabetes, are overweight it may benefit you to kick the sugar habit.

5 Sugar Addiction Symptoms I Experienced

You may be addicted to sugar if…

  • You can’t go without something sweet. Do you crave sweets, processed foods or fruit?
  • You often think about food. You think about when you will be eating next.
  • You get angry or grumpy when you are hungry.
  • Your mood is unsteady, meaning at times you feel great, other times you feel depressed.
  • You have a lot of fat around your belly.

How To Break A Sugar Addiction

I broke my sugar addiction by eating a low carb high-fat diet. You can read more about how I did a low carb high-fat diet here.

I had to break the sugar addiction by eliminating the sugar. And I realized that I would be making a lifestyle change. It helped me to compare my addiction to alcohol addiction because it feels the same in many ways. The only difference is my drug is sugar.

Well-meaning people, offer me food or drink all the time. It can be very tempting.

It helps to remind myself of what my life was like before I quit sugar.

I was very heavy and unhealthy. I had joint pain. I got migraines. I was moody. I had bowel problems. I often just felt like crap.

Now I have incredible energy. I have regular bathroom habits. I don’t get headaches and my joint pain is gone. As a side effect, I am dropping the weight. I also want to mention that as a woman of 52 I now have zero problems associated with menopause.

So that is my story. I am addicted to sugar but I don’t let it control me. I control it.
