Does Keto Work For Women Over Fifty?

Yesterday, on one of my women’s groups there was a discussion about Keto and how all the young kids are doing it. And someone asked, “Does keto work for women over 50?”

So of course, I shared my story with her and hopefully reassured her that she can absolutely lose weight and get healthy. We are never too old or too young to turn or weight around.

It feels good knowing that I am helping others.

You see, over the years, I tried everything to lose weight. And I lost a lot of temporary weight. Meaning, I yo-yo’ed. I would lose the weight, only to gain it right back. Some times it took longer than others, but ultimately I would gain it back.

And now, as a weight loss counselor, I know that not only did I have it all wrong, I also was doing damage to my body. Yo Yo dieting is not good for your heart. It isn’t good at all.

Since trying everything. I noticed when I turned 50, that I started to see a lot online about keto. So I decided to try it out. I stopped eating all processed foods. And I cut out all of my grains and other starches like root veggies. I even eliminated all fruits from my diet. I learned about 10 foods to avoid when trying to lose weight and get healthy. I eliminated sugar, bad oils and fats, processed foods and starches.

I also started adding lots of healthy foods to my diet that included meats, fish, eggs, natural fats like lard and butter, cheese and veggies that grow above the ground.

Over a 9-month period I lost over 60 pounds. My husband, Brian (boyfriend at the time) did the same and he also improved his health. He was on lots of medications for various health issues. Now he is medication free which saves lots of money. He feels like he got his life back. But I’m the lucky one because I get to have him in my life longer.

So the weight loss was very life changing for us.

Following an extremely low carb diet worked for me to finally lose the weight and keep it off long term.

The reason Keto was different for me, was because I felt like I was control. All the cravings for sweets went away and I don’t crave sweets anymore. This made it really different than some of the fad diets I tried in the past where I felt deprived. I felt like I got my life back.

If you are over 50 and wondering Does keto work for women over 50, let me assure you that it does. But you have to take the first step to get started. You have to get to that place where you are ready to make a change and you just got to make the commitment to do it. You can do it!

  1. Well, I don’t think that Keto is age selective at all. What happens to some people might be the inconvenience that comes with switching eating lifestyle. Over the years, I have found out that Keto is really helpful for me. I don’t know of my mum would need the diet too. I should talk to her about it. Thank you for giving a clear clarity to this question. Maybe I can talk my mum into trying Keto too. Is there some specific food types that goes into their own diet or just the plain Keto every other person goes with.

  2. Yes definitely, keto works for women over the age of fifty. My mom is one of a testimonies to that. She has been on the keto diet for quite some months and now and she is way above the age of 50. The major reason she started it was to complement her exercises and to help keep fit while losing body weights too and she has recorded some quite great results too with the process. So definitely, keto works well for over fifty years women

  3. This is a really educating and enlightening post. My mum has been complaining about how hard it is to loose weight and has been curious to know if Keto would work for her. So I decided to see if keto works for women over fifty and this led me to your site. She has tried a lot of techniques and drugs but she keeps going back on her promises in taking bad diets…this is a really helpful post that is well detailed and would go a long way to help my mum loose a lot of fat. kudos for this great review.

  4. Honestly, I really think that Keto diet is very effective and safe. Me and my wife tried it before, we just stopped because she got pregnant. But yes, we did lose a lot of weight and it really feels different. I feel more energized and always on the go. I’m not 50, so I may not be the right person to comment here, but with my experience, I think Keto is also good for women or men 50 years old and above. Great article! Cheers!

  5. It’s great to read success stories from people who have finally found a permanent way to control their weight. Especially as you get older and it gets harder and harder.

    The Keto diet does make a lot of sense because it goes back to what we are supposed to be eating and eliminates all junk and processed foods. I think the thing I battle with most is sugar, although as I get older my sweet tooth is slowly disappearing. How long does it take the sweet cravings to go away completely once you start on the Keto Diet?

    1. I noticed I stopped craving bread and starches after being in ketosis for a couple of weeks.  I really don’t crave sweets but if I want a treat I have low carb chocolate like lilly chocolate chips stevia bars. Or I reach for ice chips hard candy which are sweetened with zylitol. These sugar free candies don’t raise insulin so they don’t knock you out of ketosis.

  6. After me and my wife had stopped giving birth to any more babies, she has been having issues with losing fat and this have been really heavy on her chest. She have used some medications which have been causing some side effects for her and seeing this post makes me really excited knowing her diet can help her lose fat. I’ll inform her of this post and hopefully following up her diet would do the magic. 

    1. Lots of meds can cause weight gain in women, especially as we get older. She is lucky to have you as a supportive husband. Keto may be just what she needs to get back to a healthy weight. 

  7. Great and informative article. When I was a freelancer personal trainer I used to recommend and make only diet plans of keto and other low carb diets and one of the most frequently asked questions was if keto works for people on some age group or not. As a simple answer, I used to say for sure but nothing works for all. Still, I met literally not even the first who wouldn’t get help for his/her weight loss and general wellbeing by using a low carb or keto diet. Do you have articles about baking recipes that low-carb and non-gluten? I will take a further look at your website

    1. I am so glad you and your clients have had success with keto and low carb. I have found lots of success with my clients as well. I have been wanting to add more recipes but I really don’t bake that much. I pretty much cook my meat/fish and veggies and I’m done. Brian (my hubby) is the low carb grill master, I’ll have to get him to share some of his concoctions. He is really good at mixing herbs and spices to make things taste yummy!

  8. Good to know that keto works for older women, and thanks for sharing your experience. I can see that gaining or losing weight has a lot to do with eating habits. However, I thought fruits are good for health, so it got me wondering why you had to eliminate them? I have not used keto, so maybe I am simply missing something?

    1. Keto is about eliminating sugar in your diet as sugar raises insulin and stops fat burning. Fruit has fructose which turns to sugar in the bloodstream. It raises insulin.

  9. Hi, thanks for sharing!  I have a Facebook friend who had type 2 diabetes and was slightly overweight.  She decided to try keto and her diabetes is actually completely gone! All blood sugar levels normal, she isn’t even prediabetic now.  No more insulin for her! She’s, of course, lost weight, but she tried keto for her diabetes, not the weight loss, but still, she achieved it.  She was also over 50.  It definitely works!

    1. Thanks, Selenity as this will be helpful for others. I see it all the time with my clients as well. Eventually, their doctors end up reducing medications and even completely take people off meds as it isn’t needed anymore. It is all about eliminating sugar at any age but we are never too old.

  10. From all the benefits I have learned about Keto, I am pretty sure it will work well with people over 50s or any ages as long as it undergoes with the right management and follow up. At 50s, it’s been proven that it can reduce heart problems and boost function of the brains. Aside from that, we all know that women of 30 years and up is considered high risk for PCOS and keto diet is a great lifestyle to prevent it from happening. My mom is having a hard time with her physical shape, her tummy area made her become an apple shaped. I’ve been telling her to change into Keto since her cleansing diet isn’t working for her. I really hope she would be open to changes and at least try to switch and see the difference. Thank you for this enlightening post and proving that Keto is a great diet for women over 50s. 

  11. Your article title made me wonder “does Keto work for MEN over 50” and I was pleased to see the answer is a resounding yes. So appreciate you sharing your results as well as the results your husband achieved. It’s all too easy to get caught up in our world of convenient, processed foods and in reality it doesn’t take that much effort to goo for the good stuff. I’m a big believer and promoter of having a good mindset so was happy to see you offer coaching in that area as well… mindset has a huge impact on getting the desired results from our life. Are your consultations and coaching sessions available online or does one have to appear in person?      

    1. Hi Myles! Yes Keto is great for men over fifty! I do consultations and one on one counseling online Skype or face-time or over the phone. 

  12. I have a friend (male) who has been using the keto diet to fight his cancer. Although he is also doing other more traditional treatments, he would heartily endorse the keto diet since it has kept him going and appears to at least be slowing the progress of his illness. I would guess him to be about 50 years old, and I doubt that the results have anything to do with gender. I hope others will give their experiences with keto and cancer.

    1. I heard the same thing from others. Apparently the belief is that cancer cells love sugar and the Standard American diet is full of sugar and processed foods and chemicals. A keto low carb diet is low in sugar, but often “real food” so we give our bodies the good nutrition that it craves. I wish your friend all the best.

  13. Like many commenters above me, I am here on behalf on my mom. Well not exactly on behalf, since she didn’t ask me to do it for her, but she has been trying for ages with all the different diets and nothing seems to work long term for her.

    So, whenever I stumble upon a post like above and I think it’s worth something, I forward it to my mother automatically. 🙂

  14. Hello Wendy, I must say that this article is very helpful and informative. Lately, I hear that a keto diet is one of the best diets to lose excessive pounds which is true. I lost 20 pounds with keto and now my mom also practices this diet. I will point her to this article as she will definitely learn something new.

  15. I am under 50 but I have been interested in trying Keto for a while. I know you said that you cut out all root vegetables, bad oils, processed foods etc, is this a part of Keto? To eliminate these things? 
    Do you add them back in, perhaps not the food that is actually bad for you but the root vegetables and fruit?

    I like the fact that Keto can help with cravings, this, I feel, is one of the main reasons dieting does not work, it is about something that will keep your body balanced and it sounds like Keto is a very good diet to keep your body in balance.

    1. You’re welcome. Yes, this is the way of eating on a low carb diet and it is a lifestyle. With that said, it really depends on how low you need to keep your carbs in order to lose weight. For example, when I was losing weight, I kept my carbs below 20g to lose my weight. Now that I lost the weight I generally keep my carbs around 30g. Once in a while, I may add some berries or a sweet potatoe in my day. I just monitor my weight and if it starts creeping, I cut back again. Also, I am very much aware of how I feel after I eat a thing. For example, berries don’t bother me at all. But if I eat mashed potatoes, I feel all bloated. 

      And yes, this way of eating is something easy to do for the rest of your life because there are zero cravings for sweets. It is easy to follow and you will feel awesome.
