As someone who took my health back 5 years ago, I am always reading and learning as much as I can about health and nutrition so I can help others. Therefore, I read everything I can get my hands on so I can gain as much knowledge as I can.
This past week I have been reading David Perlmutter’s book, Grain Brain: The Surprising Truth about Wheat, Carbs, and Sugar–Your Brain’s Silent Killers.
The topic discussed didn’t surprise me as I learned the hard way that wheat and grain wreaks havoc on our bodies. I was almost 200 pounds. I suffered from joint pain, chronic headaches and depression. I was grumpy and moody. I often was sick with sinus problems and never really felt good.
Once I gave up the carbs it all cleared up. And now at 140 pounds I feel amazing. I don’t get headaches; I don’t get sick and my overall mental health is amazing.
I loved that a low carb diet helped me to lose the weight and gain control of my life. But this book made me realize that the lack of sugar and grains also helped me mentally. I am now realizing how cloudy my head was and how sad I felt most of the time. I thought at times, that I was crazy. Maybe I was working too many long hours and suffering from stress.
But now I know that the wheat and grain was literally stealing my emotions. I suffered from anxiety and depression for years. Wheat and grain really do affect our brains. And in many ways, it steals our life.
The elimination of all sugars and grains gave me back my life.
Wheat and gluten is a real problem in America. It is the root cause of many health issues including obesity. It is also the cause of many inflammatory diseases including type 2 diabetes. And it is frustrating for me as a health coach when I work with people and they think that they can just eat less and work out more. And yes, people can lose a little bit of weight this way, but in order to get healthy you really need to eliminate the grains.
These types of foods are also very addictive which is why many of us who struggle with our weight, wait so long to get help. And sadly, many don’t.
If you are overweight or suffer from Fibromyalgia, chronic pain, diabetes, depression, anxiety, foggy head, moody, headaches please read this book!
