Something just occurred to me as I was reading over the post I wrote a few days ago, Best Sugar-Free Drinks. I didn’t even talk about diet soda. And I should have because diet soda is often the first drink that people think about when they want to lose weight but still want to drink sweet tasting drinks. Diet sodas are designed to taste like regular sodas. But instead of having corn syrup or sugar as a sweetener, diet sodas use aspartame or sucralose as a way of sweetening the drink.
I also turned to diet sodas because I thought the sweetness and fizz would help me to not crave sweets. But I quickly discovered that actually, I ended up craving more sweets. Diet sodas seem to most people to be the perfect diet drink as it doesn’t have any calories. And people want to avoid calories.
But if you have been following a low carb diet, you know that calories mean nothing when it comes to losing weight and being healthy. However, I wanted to avoid sugar while I was losing weight. So it seemed that sugar-free sodas would be a good option because it wouldn’t raise my blood sugar. And so I would drink coke zero.
But the thing is, there is a lot of mixed information out there about artificial sweeteners which include saccharin, aspartame, sucralose. I did some research and found that there are many health risks from drinking diet sodas. Many people believe that diet sodas are even worse for your health than regular sodas. Some of the health risks I read were cancer and kidney disease. And yes, many of the information is mixed, but duh, why would I risk my health if there is even a chance that diet sodas could make me sick.
There are also a lot of beliefs that diet sodas don’t help you lose weight either. Actually, they can help you to gain weight, especially in the belly.
My thinking is pretty simple, If these artificial sweeteners are not real food then why would I want to eat or drink anything that has them in it. Why would I want to risk my health?
So this is why I really don’t even think about drinking diet sodas. Diet sodas to me are poison. Simple as that.
So what are the alternatives? One alternative is to simply drink the sugar-free drinks I wrote about earlier this week, or drink a diet soda with stevia. If you haven’t heard of Zevia Zero Calorie Soda, You gotta check it out. It is the best! I love it!

These sodas taste great. I have tried the cola flavor and the cream soda flavor. Actually, my go to when I’m drinking an alcoholic beverage is Rum (which is sugar-free) and Cola Zevia. It is my version of a rum and diet. I enjoy it and I don’t miss the sugar one bit.
But I have to tell you the cream soda is amazing. It has that nice creamy vanilla taste I remember from when I was a kid. My kids and grandkids tried it and they love it too.
So the bottom line is I prefer not to put my health at risk by drinking diet sodas. But luckily there are some really great alternatives out there.
