What is the Best Low Carb Chocolate?

best low carb chocolateOne the the hardest things for me to give up when I changed my way of eating was chocolate. I mean I was literally addicted to Hershey Kisses. I would totally go through a bag a week.

Fortunately after following a low carbohydrate lifestyle, my cravings for chocolate went away for the most part. You see, sugar is very addictive and it triggers cravings. But once you have eliminated most processed sugar from your diet, the cravings diminish. Which makes it easier to say NO to chocolate.

But once in a while, a piece of chocolate would be nice. I often enjoy a small piece of dark chocolate after dinner.

The good news, chocolate is full of antioxidants. So it is actually very good for you and a good addition to your diet. The best chocolate for people is 70% or higher cocoa content. This is better for those who follow a Keto or Paleo lifestyle as well, because those chocolates typically contain less sugar. I prefer 86% or higher. It is very rich and a bit bitter at first, but you get used to it.

I like the Lindt Excellence Bar, 90% Cocoa Supreme Dark Chocolate as to me, it tastes really smooth and satisfying. And to me it isn’t bitter at all. I find one block is enough to satisfy me. If you are used to sugary chocolate, than this low carb dark chocolate may take some getting used to. But I find it really rich and I don’t miss the sugar at all.

But if you are really missing chocolate and the dark chocolate isn’t doing it for you, Then I suggest you try LILY’S Chocolate.  This chocolate is perfect for those who miss the sweet taste of sugar. It is 100% sugar free and tastes amazing! They are sweetened with Stevia so there is no worries about artificial sweeteners either. Lily’s Bars are naturally non GMO which is important to me. These bars come in 4 different flavors: original chocolate, Almond, crispy rice, coconut, creamy milk and my favorite is salted almond milk.

If you like to use chocolate for your baking then Lily’s also has Dark Chocolate chips make especially for baking all of your low carb treats. I like that Amazon ships these products in cold packs so there isn’t an issue with melted chocolate. It arrives fresh and yummy!

Hopefully I gave you a few ideas for your chocolate cravings. Have you tried the Lily’s Chocolate? How did you like it? Do you have another sugar free candy that your prefer?

  1. Thanks for these great tips! I looooove chocolate too and can’t seem to remove my cravings. Maybe it’s because I’m still eating a lot of sugar. I prefer dark chocolate but I find 90% too bitter. I think Im halfway of that with 45% dark chocolate for now. I will try Lily’s bars. They look yummy and seem like a great option with different flavors too. Thank you!

  2. Nice recommendation. It’s good to know that there are healthier brands out there which leave the GMO. At first a bar of chocolate might not seem like a big deal. But then comes the second, and the third… Let alone chocolate in other foods like biscuits. Let alone when you do this everyday. If you are constantly nibbling on some type of snack, then better make sure they’re not bad for you.

  3. Interesting post this is. I’m on a keto diet and I have reduced my sugar intake drastically to fit in well to my diet plan. I won’t lie, getting started was not easy at all as I had to neglect chocolate and most of my sugary delicacies. I didn’t know of this lily’s before but now that I do, I guess I’ll give them a try and considering they are a perfect fit into my meal plan, I’m perfectly okay by this. Thanks

    1. Thank you RoDarrick! And I wish you all the best with your Keto diet. How are things going so far? I’d love to hear about your success.

  4. Well this is an article I am definitely going to share with my partner!

I’m not what you’d call the biggest fan of chocolate, or any sort of candy, but my partner loves it! She’s also constantly slimming…which she doesn’t need to do in my book as she always looks great.

I notice you cover a Lindt brand in your article, which is one of her favorite chocolate makers. Is this the only low carb choice they provide or are there others (maybe in the milk range instead of dark?).

    1. Hi Chris, Typically milk chocolate is going to be much higher in carbs than dark chocolate because of the milk. Milk isn’t so good for people as it has added sugar.

  5. Chocolate is so good, it is really a huge addiction to most due it’s nature.

If you could make a bar of low carb chocolate that when you eat it, it doesn’t pack on the pounds that would be something people would buy.

Would people just eat twice as much though if they knew it was healthy?  And then it would become unhealthy?

Lindt type chocolate would be my favourite, before this article I didn’t realize it was good low carb chocolate.  Thanks for the heads up.

I think I am going to buy some chocolate today!

    1. Actually I find that I am more satisfied and only eat like a block or two at most. In the past, I could eat an entire bag of Hershey kisses (sad but true).

  6. I like to think about chocolate’s antioxidant qualities when I enjoy a chocolate treat.  🙂  I love Lindt’s chocolates.   I’m not sure that I’ve snacked on the variety that you enjoy.

I have not ever tried the Lily’s chocolate.    I try to avoid artificial sweeteners when possible.  Yet, if it is sweetened with Steva, it might be worth a try.

For now, I’ve been waiting to see if the new ruby chocolate will be found to have any health benefits.   Even if doesn’t have any, I am looking forward to trying it.  On a cheat day of course.

  7. Hi! I love chocolate! I have loved chocolate all my life. But now that I’m on a diet and slashed sugar I’m surprised how I can actually live without it! But I know that if I’m going to have a piece once in a while I should pick out the best low carb chocolate. So I’ll diffidently try Lindt Excellence Bar, 90% Cocoa Supreme Dark Chocolate! Thanks for the suggestion.

  8. I remember when I was dieting when I was younger, I had no cravings for sugar at all! It was amazing. But now, I wish this was true, but I have been eating way too much sugar lately.

I love dark chocolate, but it is good for you, right? And you are correct in the fact that a little does go a long way.

I am not sure if you have heard of the grocery store Trader Joe’s? They have the absolute best selection of dark chocolate bars I have ever seen. The Trader Joe’s Imported 72% Cacao Dark Belgian Chocolate Bars are out of this world! And they also offer the Dark Chocolate Lover’s Chocolate Bar, which has 85% Cacao. I encourage you to give them a try. They are on Amazon 🙂

    1. I will for sure! We have a Trader Joe’s just across the border in Maryland. I will have to take a drive! Thank you.

  9. Hello Wendy :),

This post on the best low carb chocolate was both helpful and informative as i have a sweet tooth and i am trying to not add the weight i worked so hard to loose over the past 9 months.

I only enjoy chocolate on my cheat days but i am willing to try Lilly’s chocolate as you have recommended to sweet if my sweet tooth would be satisfied without consequences. I would be going for the creamy Flavor. It seems that the lowest carb chocolates are dark chocolate. I wish there was low carb milk chocolate.

  10. Hello dear Wendy,

I can 100% relate to you! The last few months, I have made a lot of changes in my diet in order to be more healthy and mostly plant-based, however, I’m still struggling to give up chocolate. Whenever I stumble upon it I can’t resist and I can eat up to a whole bar.  Lilly’s chocolate seems like a good alternative to the ones we buy in the supermarket, and it is also sweet without having any sugar. I will try it for sure!

    Regards Kate

    1. You will have to let me know what you think of Lilys Low carb, Keto Diet friendly premium milk chocolate. You will not be disappointed.

  11. Every time there is mention of chocolate, my antennas just shoot up. I AM ADDICTED! For someone that is on a weightloss journey like me, I still find it impossible to say NO to chocolate.

I long for the day I will be able to kick away processed sugar in order to reduce chocolate cravings.I am learning new information here. I like a chocolate that has the taste of chocolate, sweet. And the Lily’s chocolate sounds like something I would want to try. 100% sugar free? Perfect!

Thank you for this sweet article. Much appreciated.

  12. Everyone in my family loves chocolate. This is the reason why I try not to put it in the grocery cart because there’s no stopping my kids and myself as well in getting one until it’s gone. Though it’s good as antioxidants, my worries are all about the sugar and artificial ingridients with it. I’m afraid it might trigger diabetes to my kids since my husband has a family history on it.

This is the first time I heard about the brand Lily’s Chocolate. It’s not available in our country and the only way to purchase is through online. I think this is the perfect chocolate for us. What I like best is the variety of flavors it offers. But what I like best is that it’s non GMO. I’m really particular in that area. Thanks you for introducing this brand!

    1. I try to stay away from GMO products as well. There is a lot of GMO here in America. Actually it is hard to avoid it. All corn, wheat and soy is GMO!

  14. Hi,

Thanks for this great article about the best low carb chocolate. I am personally a chocolate lover. But after my younger childbirth put too much weight that I have start dieting, but when my personal trainer said you will not get any benefit from any exercise until you avoid all the sugary food, chocolate-I thought the sky broken on my head. How can I left my chocolate, I couldn’t understand. And you know what I did? I left my PT but can’t leave my chocolate. But after reading your article, I think I got my solution. I will definitely try this low carb chocolate.

    1. Actually, chocolate is very good for you. It is full of antioxidants. I hope you like one of the low carb chocolates I have suggested for you. I’m like you. I could never be without my chocolate. I could get rid of sugar but not chocolate!

  15. Wow, this is very informative. I’ve been underweight all my life trying to gain weight so I keep eating all sorts of sugary stuff just to gain a few pounds, but it never worked for me.

What you said about the GMO chocolates completely threw me off. I’ve never really paid attention to what type of chocolate I consumed but thanks to this article ill be more cautious. What I would like to know is aside from weight gain are there serious negative effects from chocolates?
I’ve never been a fan of dark chocolate but I’ll have to try out the lilys.

    1. There is no serious negative effects from chocolate, I just personally try to stay away from genetically modified foods. But chocolate is good for you and yes, dark chocolate is always best. It is just that the purer the cocoa is the better. And of course, milk chocolate tends to have much more sugar. So I avoid it.
